Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali government has shut down 12 media outlets and websites allegedly affiliated with the Al-Shabaab militant group, months after previously shutting down over 30 Al-Shabaab-linked websites.
The crackdown, conducted by Somali security and cyber agencies, targeted platforms accused of spreading extremist ideologies, inciting violence, and disseminating false information.
Authorities have also seized critical data and identified individuals involved in operating these outlets, including those who financially supported their activities.
In the operation, thousands of files and posts created by Al-Shabaab on various social media platforms were destroyed, significantly disrupting the group’s ability to spread its propaganda online, according to the government.

The Somali government has vowed to continue dismantling all forms of media used by extremist groups like Al-Shabaab and other terrorist organizations. Authorities also warned they will not tolerate media platforms or individuals promoting violence, extremism, or misinformation, urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious online activities.
