Mogadishu (HOL) — A bloc of opposition politicians in Puntland has launched a new political council to challenge what they describe as increasing authoritarianism under President Said Abdullahi Deni, citing political repression and democratic backsliding in the semi-autonomous Somali region.

The Council for Justice and Democracy in Puntland, announced Monday in the regional capital Garowe, is chaired by former MP Guled Salah Barre and includes members critical of Deni’s governance. The group says it aims to address political instability, economic hardship, and social grievances while advocating for inclusive and accountable leadership.

“The people of Puntland must be allowed to speak freely, without fear of arrest or intimidation,” Barre said. “Unfortunately, this administration has chosen repression over reform.”

The council accuses the Deni government of targeting dissenting voices through unlawful detentions and smear campaigns and alleges that opposition figures with differing views are routinely harassed.

The group is also calling for any constitutional reforms in Puntland to be grounded in national consultation and consensus. It reaffirmed its commitment to Somali unity and urged inclusive dialogue to prevent further political fragmentation.
