Mogadishu (HOL) – The Somali Salvation Forum, a coalition of opposition political actors, has strongly condemned the ongoing process to select members of the National Independent Human Rights Commission, accusing the federal government of unlawful interference.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Forum criticized the process as flawed and politically influenced, urging the government to immediately suspend all activities related to the selection until they align with the legal framework.
“The presidency and the government must withdraw from the selection process and allow it to proceed in accordance with Law No. 16. All Somali citizens should have equal opportunity to serve their country through this commission, free from political interference,” the Forum's statement read.
The condemnation comes in the wake of examinations held in Mogadishu for prospective commission members. The recruitment process is being overseen by the Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development, with participation from government officials and civil society representatives.
The dispute adds to mounting tensions between the opposition and the federal government, amid wider concerns over transparency in critical state-building processes, including constitutional reforms, election preparations, and the establishment of independent oversight bodies.
Opposition leaders have repeatedly called for greater adherence to the rule of law and the separation of powers, warning that politicizing institutions meant to safeguard rights and democracy threatens national progress and public trust.
