Puntland security forces arrest youth protesters in Galkayo over development dispute

Friday June 6, 2025

Galkayo (HOL)  – Puntland security forces arrested several young men on Friday morning following Eid prayers at the Awaale Sports Stadium in Galkayo, accusing them of organizing a protest against the Puntland administration and federal government restrictions on development projects in the Mudug region.

The youths were reportedly carrying banners expressing public grievances and highlighting unmet development needs in the region. The Mudug regional administration ordered the arrests to prevent what it described as an unauthorized protest.

Galkayo Mayor Mohamed Abdirisaq defended the move, stating that the city was not in a position to accommodate public demonstrations and urged the community to remain calm.

Authorities have accused the detained youths of acting on behalf of the Federal Government, claiming the demonstration was politically motivated and aimed at inciting unrest in Galkayo.

This incident comes amid ongoing tensions between Puntland and the Federal Government, with Puntland leaders rejecting several development initiatives due to unresolved political disputes. Independent analysts say that Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has refused to implement a number of federal-backed projects, leading to delays and cancellations of major development programs in the region.

The Puntland administration has warned that it will take firm action against any efforts to stir public dissent, as frustrations grow among local communities over stalled development and political deadlock.
