Farmaajo criticizes upcoming National Consultation Forum, warns of deepening political crisis

Thursday June 5, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) – Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has issued a strong statement criticizing the management and inclusivity of the upcoming National Consultation Forum called by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

In a statement released on Thursday, Farmaajo accused President Hassan Sheikh of bypassing critical stakeholders and pursuing a unilateral agenda in handling core national issues such as constitutional amendments and the electoral process.

“As we have repeatedly recommended, issues that affect the fate of the Somali people and the governance system must be discussed at all levels — both federal and state — to preserve national unity and cohesion,” Farmaajo said.

He expressed concern that the current process excludes key actors and fails to address the most pressing challenges facing the country, particularly disputes surrounding the remaining 11 chapters of the provisional constitution.

“The President is heading toward a path that will lead the country into a new crisis,” Farmaajo warned, alleging that efforts are underway to push unconstitutional amendments without broad consensus.

The former president called for inclusive dialogue that involves all federal and state stakeholders, including Puntland and Jubbaland, whose leaders remain at odds with the federal government. It remains unclear whether these two states will attend the forum, which is scheduled to open on June 15, 2025, in Mogadishu.

Farmaajo urged the government to return to the agreed constitutional framework, prioritize national unity, and avoid decisions that may further fragment Somalia’s political landscape.
