Mogadishu (HOL) — Ali Jeyte Osman, Somalia’s Special Envoy for Community Defense Forces under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s office, has called on government troops and local militias to unite for a major offensive against Al-Shabaab militants in Hiiraan.

Speaking to hundreds of Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers and members of the Macawisley, a grassroots militia, Jeyte described the operation as a crucial step toward restoring peace and stability. “We must take advantage of this moment,” he said. “Any area we target will be treated as an Al-Shabaab stronghold. The hardships we endure now will lead to a brighter future. Tribal wars destroy us, but this is a war for justice and unity. Let us march forward together.”

Jeyte, who previously served as governor of Hiiraan, also urged civilians living in areas controlled by Al-Shabaab to evacuate, emphasizing the need to minimize harm to innocent lives during the offensive. “This is a war we must fight with resolve and purpose. Let us forgive one another and focus on liberating our communities,” he added.

The planned offensive comes as Somali military leaders, including the heads of the intelligence service and land forces, finalize preparations for coordinated strikes. The operation aims to eradicate Al-Shabaab’s presence in Hiiraan, a region that has endured years of violence and instability under the group’s control.

Hiiraan has been the epicentre of intensified military efforts, with government forces and local militias increasingly working together to reclaim territory. The Macawisley militia, composed of local volunteers, has played a pivotal role in recent gains against the militants, often fighting alongside the SNA.
