Somali forces repel Al-Shabaab attack, secure Masagawaa

Abukar Moalim Mohamud, Spokesperson for Somalia’s Ministry of Defense, briefs the media on recent military operations against Al-Shabaab and ISIS militants, highlighting the successful defense of Masagawaa town.

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali National Army (SNA) troops and local militia forces successfully repelled an early morning attack by Al-Shabaab militants on the town of Masagawaa in the Galgaduud region, the Federal Ministry of Defense confirmed Saturday.

According to Abukar Moalim Mohamud, the spokesperson for Somalia’s Ministry of Defense, the militants initiated their attack with coordinated blasts designed to overwhelm the town’s defences. However, Somali forces, who had reportedly anticipated the strike, quickly mobilized to repel the assault.

“Our security forces and local allies thwarted the extremists’ plans to wreak havoc on Masagawaa,” Mohamud said. “The town is now fully under control, and its people are safe.”

The latest confrontation is part of Somalia’s intensifying campaign against militant groups. In recent weeks, government forces have ramped up operations across the country, targeting both Al-Shabaab and ISIS strongholds. Mohamud highlighted a pivotal victory in Puntland, where Daraawiish forces dismantled a major ISIS command center in Tuursamaale, a critical base in the Bari region.

Military campaigns have also seen success in other regions, including Hiiraan and Galgaduud, with coordinated strikes to dismantle militant networks. “These operations reflect our unwavering commitment to eliminating extremist threats and ensuring peace for our citizens,” Mohamud said.

While the exact casualties from the Masagawaa clash remain undisclosed, the operation’s success is part of a broader government push to reassert control over key areas long plagued by insecurity. Somalia’s military strategy has increasingly relied on collaboration with local militias, who play an outsized role in securing towns and villages from insurgent threats.
