Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) Commissioner Mahmoud Moalim Abdulle met with a United Nations delegation led by George Conway, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, to address the ongoing drought crisis and humanitarian challenges.
The meeting focused on the drought conditions affecting several regions of Somalia, plans for a 2025 humanitarian response strategy, and strengthening collaboration between aid agencies and SODMA.
Both parties agreed to organize a conference in 2025 to discuss fundraising efforts to deliver immediate relief to vulnerable populations.
Commissioner Abdulle urged the UN delegation to intensify support for the most impoverished communities and enhance coordination among humanitarian organizations operating in Somalia.
The meeting came as Somalia officially declared a drought phase following the failure of the Deyr rainy season in late 2024, typically from September to November. The federal government has called for urgent assistance to mitigate the escalating humanitarian crisis.
