Garowe (HOL) – Puntland's Minister of Information, Eng. Mohamud Aydid Dirir, on Tuesday accused Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of failing to prepare for the country's 2026 elections.
Speaking in Garowe, Dirir criticized the ongoing National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting, stating it had failed to prevent President Hassan Sheikh from attempting to extend his term.
"Hassan and his dictatorial principles hit the wall. He will be called out of Villa Somalia as he called Mohamed out in 2021."
Dirir warned that President Hassan Sheikh's political ambitions could plunge the country into unprecedented instability, sparking a constitutional crisis as the 2026 elections approach.
Meanwhile, Somali Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre confirmed that the NCC meeting in Mogadishu is still ongoing, despite Jubbaland leader Ahmed Madobe's withdrawal and return to Kismayo.
Prime Minister Barre assured that federal and regional leaders are actively engaged in consultations, and official decisions will be announced once talks are concluded. Madobe has argued that without the participation of Puntland and Khatumo, the credibility of upcoming elections could be compromised.
