Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali forces, supported by international partners and local militia, have killed at least 59 al-Shabab militants in two operations in the Galgadud and Middle Shabelle regions over the last two days.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Information on Tuesday, 32 militants, including key commanders, were killed near Garilay in the Galgadud region, while 27 others were eliminated in Yaaqle village near Hawadlay in Middle Shabelle.
The statement also confirmed that four Somali army soldiers lost their lives during the operations. This comes just days after joint forces reportedly killed over 100 al-Shabab fighters in military efforts around the recently liberated town of Eldher in Galmudug.
Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur told a press conference in the capital Mogadishu that current operations involve both ground and air strikes aimed at dismantling the militant group’s infrastructure.
