Somali Prime Minister affirms NCC meeting continues despite Ahmed Madobe's exit

Tuesday October 8, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre confirmed on Tuesday that the National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting in Mogadishu is still ongoing, despite the recent return of Jubbaland leader Ahmed Madobe to Kismayo following a political standoff over upcoming elections.

Speaking in Mogadishu, Prime Minister Barre assured that federal and regional leaders are engaged in consultations on key issues and will issue official decisions once these discussions conclude.

"The National Consultative Council meeting that opened on the 2nd of October is still going on. The leaders are holding important consultations, and once these are complete, official statements will be released," he said.

The Prime Minister emphasized the government's dedication to Somali unity, stating, "We are committed to the unity and nationalism of Somalis and to avoiding anything that can lead to the division of the Somali people. We are committed to moving the country forward."

This is the ninth NCC meeting since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was re-elected in 2022. Despite the setback caused by Madobe's departure, Prime Minister Barre expressed optimism about the success of the ongoing talks.

Jubbaland President Ahmed Madobe's withdrawal from the meeting was due to his insistence on including Puntland and Khatumo in the discussions. He argued that without their participation, it would be impossible to hold nationwide elections that meet the credibility standards necessary for the process.
