Addis Ababa (HOL) – Ethiopia's parliament elected Ambassador Taye Atske-Selassie as the country's new president on Monday, succeeding Sahle-Work Zewde, who completed her term in office.
Taye was elected during the joint opening session of the 6th House of People's Representatives (HoPR) and the House of Federation (HoF), marking the start of the 4th year of their term. Following the vote, he was sworn in as president and officially received the country's constitution from his predecessor.
The joint session was attended by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, outgoing President Sahle-Work Zewde, parliamentary speakers, lawmakers, and other dignitaries.
In a brief handover ceremony, Sahle-Work transferred the constitution to Taye but did not address the parliament before leaving the assembly.
Ambassador Taye has previously served as the minister of foreign affairs for Ethiopia.
