4.9 magnitude earthquake hit Ethiopia, shocks felt in the capital

Toronto – 4.9 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 10 kilometers reportedly hit Ethiopia. It occurred in Awash Fentale area – which is about 165 kilometers south east of Addis Ababa. Government Communication Services has confirmed it in a social media update.

The earthquake occurred on Sunday around 9 P.M. local time.

The shock was felt in the capital Addis Ababa, Metehara to the south east  and Kombolcha (near Dessie) in the North.

“Volcano Discovery”  reported 10 major earthquakes around the world over the past 24 hours including in Canada and the United States. The one experienced in Ethiopia was included in the list.

The source indicated the latitudinal and longitudinal location of the epicenter as ” 9.1287°N / 40.3209°E Harari, Ethiopia”

“Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc,” The source said.

Unlike the report from Ethiopian government communication services, the report from ‘Volcano Discovery” said that the incident occured in Harari about 41 km northwest of Gelemso, Oromiya. For this source, it occurred around 8:10 P.M. Addis Ababa time.

As well, “Volcano Discovery” described the earthshakes felt in nearby areas as “moderate”

Ethiopian government communication services cited reports as saying that there had been minor earth shocks over the past few days. They anticipate no circumstance worse than this.

Ethiopia had been experiencing severe unprecedented landslides in different parts of the country over the past few months that claimed over 300 lives.
