Mogadishu (HOL) – The National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting between regional and federal leaders entered its second day on Thursday, focusing on the upcoming elections, national security, and political stability.
According to sources close to the discussions, the NCC is expected to address the issue of some regional state leaders whose terms have ended as the opposition calls for timely elections.
Opposition groups have already warned against any proposals to extend the mandates of federal and regional leaders, urging the NCC to prioritize strengthening government institutions and enhancing state-building efforts.
Reliable reports indicate that the council will also discuss strategies for ensuring a smooth electoral process and addressing security challenges that Al-Shabaab and other forces pose.
The two-day meeting is attended by leaders from Jubaland, Hirshabelle, Southwest, and Galmudug, as well as the mayor of Mogadishu, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, and his deputy.
However, Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni remains absent due to ongoing political disputes with federal government leaders, particularly President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The outcome of the NCC discussions is expected to shape the political landscape ahead of Somalia's elections, amidst growing demands for accountability and transparent governance.
