SSC Khaatumo accuses Somaliland of targeting civilians in Erigavo clashes

Monday December 16, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — The SSC Khaatumo administration has accused Somaliland of deliberately targeting civilians in Erigavo following two days of fighting in the city.

In a press statement issued by SSC Khaatumo, the administration alleged that the recent clashes resulted in civilian casualties and the looting of public property, describing the incident as part of a prolonged pattern of intimidation by Somaliland against certain segments of the population.

"SSC Khaatumo views this as a deliberate offensive and a violation of community rights," the statement read. "The administration also highlights the indiscriminate shelling of Las Anod over the past nine months by Somaliland, which has claimed the lives of numerous civilians."

The statement further criticized newly elected Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Cirro, accusing him of exacerbating tensions by seeking to assert control over the former British Somaliland borders through force. President Irro, however, has stated his intention to pursue a diplomatic resolution to end the hostilities.

The two-day conflict in Erigavo involved clashes between Somaliland forces and SSC Khaatumo fighters. The fighting has since subsided, with SSC Khaatumo forces reporting a tactical withdrawal from the city, while Somaliland media claimed that government forces successfully expelled the SSC Khaatumo fighters.

As of now, no official figures have been released regarding the casualties, but reports indicate that civilians have suffered fatalities and injuries. Both sides are also believed to have incurred significant losses.
