Mogadishu (HOL) — Frustration spilled into the streets of Hargeisa as residents protested Mayor Abdikarim Ahmed Mooge, accusing him of failing to fulfill his 2021 campaign pledges to green the city, build paved roads, and create safer pathways for pedestrians and cyclists.

Elected with overwhelming support in 2021, Mayor Mooge campaigned on bold promises to transform Hargeisa. His vision of tree-lined streets, efficient drainage systems, and dedicated pedestrian pathways inspired voters, but critics now argue that little progress has been made.

“Mayor, come and be accountable,” demanded Khadar Hambabar, a taxi driver protesting in the Xera-Awr neighbourhood. “I pay my taxes, but my car is stuck in the garage. Where are the services we were promised?”

Protests erupted across Hargeisa’s neighbourhoods, including Kodbuur, 26 June, and Gacan Libaax. Once fervent supporters of Mayor Mooge, many demonstrators now accuse him of neglecting the ambitious promises that won their votes.

Prominent poet Hassan Dahir Weedhsame joined the growing chorus of criticism, declaring online, “This mayor will be held accountable. Even the strongest guards cannot shield him from the people’s scrutiny.”

While tensions escalate, Mayor Mooge has remained silent, ignoring public calls for accountability. Government authorities have moved to suppress the protests, citing security concerns, but demonstrators argue this has only deepened their frustration.
