Mogadishu (HOL) - At least 20 al-Shabaab militants were killed and others injured in a planned operation executed by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) Forces, supported by international allies in the Lower Shabelle region on Thursday night.
NISA announced in a statement that the operation took place between Ugunji and Mubarak areas, where the militants were gathering in a forested region.
Al Shabaab has not commented on the operation, which resulted in the deaths of two dozen of its militiamen.
The Somali National Army has been combating al-Shabaab terrorists since President Mohamud declared an "all-out war" on them after being re-elected for a second term in May last year.
As military operations escalate, al-Shabaab terrorists have recently intensified attacks within the country, targeting security personnel, military bases, and government installations.
On Thursday, Al Shabaab claimed to have attempted to assassinate a Somali defence ministry officer purportedly linked to the US drone programme in Mogadishu's Wadajir district.
