Somali Prime Minister suspends Foreign Minister over illegal charcoal exports

Tuesday May 24, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble suspended Foreign Affairs Minister Abdisaid Muse on Tuesday. Prime Minister Roble also nullified Muse’s letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that authorized a ship carrying illegal charcoal exported from Somalia and docked off the coast of Oman.

In a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, Roble said that the letter from the ministry violates national and international law and poses a threat to the country.

The Prime Minister instructed the National Audit Office and security agencies to investigate the matter and report it to the judiciary.

The announcement follows a day after the Prime Minister returned to Mogadishu from UAE and briefed the new President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on the meetings he held with the new President of UAE, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Abdisaid Muse did not respond to the Prime Minister's allegations. Still, reports indicate that the Prime Minister's working relationship with his foreign minister has not been good since former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo appointed him to replace Mohamed Abdirizak Mohamud Abubakar as foreign minister.

Somalia's former president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo handed over full power to his successor Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in a handover ceremony held at the presidential palace on Monday.
