Somali Attorney General summons Finance Minister

Sunday June 26, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somalia's Minister of Finance, Abdirahman Duale  Beileh, was summoned to the office of the Attorney General on Saturday to inquire about financial matters that the office was investigating.

According to a letter from the office, The Attorney General called the Minister before the financial, economic, and cybercrimes unit. However, it is unclear if the Minister is under investigation directly.

The Minister was ordered to appear before the Attorney General's office on June 27, 2022, at 11:00 AM.

Last week, the Minister of Finance denied reports that the federal government's coffers were full after the departure of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajjo.

In late May, Somalia's Ministry of Finance released its sixth Financial Governance Report (FGR), which revealed that it was forced to find "alternative sources" of funding to continue bankrolling critical government operations. Donors cut off primary sources of budgetary support following Somalia's failure to hold federal elections by February 2021.

One of these alternative sources may have been the establishment of what came to be known as the Somali Sovereign Fund - or Alool -  in late April 2021. Minister Beileh called on the Somali diaspora to contribute to the fund while on a Zoom interview with political commentator Abdi Hersy. It remains unclear how much money was raised through the initiative and how it was spent.
