Somali President attends 62nd Independence ceremony in Mogadishu

Friday July 1, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre attended a celebration ceremony of Somalia's 62nd anniversary of independence in Mogadishu last night.

President Mohamud said that the problems that had crippled Somalia since independence are primarily the result of the frustration and mistrust of the Somali people in their government. He stressed the significance of resolving these issues and the government's priority to unite the Somali people and find solutions to current problems.

"This country has had many problems since attaining independence, but the division we experienced in the North was the most upsetting, and we are still trying to find a solution for over 30 years. We are still struggling to restore the confidence among the people to recover fully," he said.

Somalia's southern provinces won independence from Italy in 1960 after years of struggle. The northern regions, now Somaliland, gained independence from Britain on June 26, 1960, and four days later united with the South, becoming the Republic of Somalia.

"June 26 is the real Independence Day of Somalia; July 1 is the Unity Day", he said, adding that the country is on its way to achieving self-sufficiency and development.

This year's Independence celebrations coincided when Somalia faced the worst drought in 40 years. The President stated impacts of the drought have put the country in a challenging situation and called the Somali people to assist the government in its efforts to help those suffering from the drought.
