Ministers met lawmakers ahead of parliamentary confirmation vote

Thursday August 4, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - The newly-appointed Council of Ministers has reportedly started lobbying lawmakers to win a vote of confidence from the federal parliament.

The ministers, alongside President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, have met with lawmakers in Mogadishu since the appointment of the ministerial council. There are reports that some factions within parliament are dissatisfied with the nominations.

The speaker of the Lower House, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, received the Ministers of the Federal Government representing the Southwest regional state Jubbaland at his residence in Mogadishu on Wednesday night.

Sources say that the meeting was part of the ministers' campaign to secure a vote of confidence. The speaker reportedly expressed satisfaction with the process used to choose the ministers.

Members of the Cabinet have already begun visiting lawmakers from their region to persuade them to support the nomination vote when they are introduced to the parliament. Abdukhadir Nur Jamac, the minister of defence, met with lawmakers from his constituency on Wednesday.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud asked the federal parliament to approve the newly-appointed Council of Ministers so they could promptly begin their work.
