Abdirashid Janan: FEIT saved Gedo from being left without representation

Friday April 15, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Former Jubbaland security minister Abdirashid Janan said that he welcomed the Federal Election Implementation Team's decision to move the election venue from Garbaharey to Elwak.

Janan said that the federal election commission made the right decision to save the process. He argued that the electoral commission had little choice and that the alternative was to leave the Gedo region without representation in parliament.

"The election can't happen in Garbaharey because it is under siege against Jubaland's will. The regional vice president - who was born there - cannot even go there. However, if he (VP) can go to Elwak, and the Jubbaland president, Jubbaland election commission and the FEIT can all travel to Elwak, I do not see any problem in holding the election there."

Janan accused Farmajo and federal security forces of stifling the Gedo region, saying their selfish interests jeopardized its future stability.

"The President's team says that Jubaland State VP Mohamud Sayid Aden cannot come to Garbaharey, and the elections will happen. Meanwhile, (Abdullahi) Kulane, a senior intelligence official elected as an MP from Galmudug in Dhusamareb, can travel to Garbaharey and participate in the elections in an official capacity. It is incredible, and anyone with common sense cannot allow it."

The former Jubbaland security minister was a fugitive in the eyes of Somalia's federal government until he reached a deal in late March 2021.
