MOGADISHU (HOL) - Somali government said Wednesday a joint military operation between the Somali National Army and Galmudug state forces resulted in the deaths of 25 Al-Shabaab militants.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Information, the fighting which started on Tuesday through to Wednesday morning claimed the lives of five Galmudug state forces.
Among those killed was commander of the Horseed Battalion of Galmudug state Mohamed Ali.
The fighting took place in Aad Village in Mudug region. Al-Shabaab however claimed it killed more than 30 soldiers.
The SNA and Galmudug forces have conducted several ground operations against Al-Shabaab in the Mudug region in the last three months pushing the militants and reclaiming several villages.
Today’s fighting comes barely two days after the Federal Government said it had killed 279 Al-Shabaab militants in the last one month.
A government report on Monday added that the operations which took place in Hiiraan, Middle and Lower Shabelle, Lower Juba and Mudug regions also resulted in the capture of five towns and 16 villages.
The joint forces also destroyed 20 Al-Shabaab bases and four Vehicle Borne IEDs, the report added. The military offensives come as the country enters into the election season.
