Tuesday September 15, 2020

MOGADISHU (HOL) - The UN and other international partners in Somalia have urged the country’s leaders meeting in Mogadishu to find a solution on the ongoing electoral stalemate to put the country’s interests in the forefront.

While welcoming the talks hosted by president Mohamed Farmaajo, the partners said it was important that the leaders set aside their differences in order to find an acceptable and workable electoral formula.

“The partners urge the Somali leaders to engage fully in serious dialogue aimed at reaching broad agreement on a credible and implementable electoral model,” the statement read in part.

The international community also called for the inclusion of other stakeholders in the talks to ensure an inclusive solution is reached. They added it was necessary the leaders put the country’s interests at the forefront.

“International partners appeal to Somalia’s leaders to be guided by the national interest and the democratic aspirations of the Somali people at this historic moment.”

All federal member state presidents and president Mohamed Farmaajo have been meeting for two days now to discuss a suitable electoral model for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Banaadir regional governor Omar Filish is also attending the talks.

The talks take a break today and are expected to resume from tomorrow. Meanwhile Galmudug president Ahmed Qoorqoor is today expected to address the Upper House.
