Local flights in Somalia to resume July 5-Cabinet

Thursday July 2, 2020

MOGADISHU (HOL) - Local flights in Somalia will resume on Sunday after two months suspension in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Gulaid announced the resumption following a cabinet meeting Thursday in Mogadishu.

The DPM said the move to allow local flights followed deliberation by the cabinet which took into consideration measures to contain spread of the COVID-19 disease.

The Ministry of Transport had announced early last month flights would resume by the second week of June but there was no communication since then.

The Federal Government suspended local and international flights in mid-April for two weeks and subsequently ordered an indefinite suspension by end of April.

The government did not indicate when international flights would resume.

As of June 30, the number of COVID-19 cases in Somalia had risen to 2,924 with 90 fatalities. A total of 932 people have recovered from the disease.

Learning institutions remain closed but the break-away region of Somaliland announced re-opening of schools last week.
