MOGADISHU (HOL) - Somali government has vowed to establish the circumstances under which an inmate at Mogadishu central jail acquired a gun and killed at least 10 people among them security guards.
Justice Minister Hassan Haji said investigations will commence immediately adding those who bear responsibility for securing the guns will be held liable.
“We will not leave anything to chance. The government is investigating how this happened and who was responsible for what happened as well as who facilitated the inmates to get the weapons," the minister said.
At least 10 people among them inmates and prison guards were killed Monday afternoon after one of the inmates acquired a gun and started firing indiscriminately. Initial reports indicated the prisoner had snatched the gun from one of the guards.
The attacker is said to be an Al-Shabaab operative serving a jail term in the prison which houses some of the hardcore criminals who are on long term sentences.
The Minister said the government is putting in place measures to avert such incidents in the future and keep safe both inmate and guards.
