International flights resume in Somalia tomorrow

Sunday August 2, 2020

MOGADISHU (HOL) - International flights to and from Somalia will resume tomorrow (Monday) about five months after they were suspended following the outbreak of the COVID19 pandemic.

The Immigration Department announced Sunday the resumption of the flights noting travelers must meet stringent health measures to curb the spread of COVID19.

"The travellers must have a medical certificate confirming they are free from coronavirus. The certificate (Coronavirus negative certificate) should be obtained not later than 72 hours before the travel time," the department said.

Somalia suspended local and international flights in mid March following an uptick in COVID19 in the country. Local flights resumed last month.

Somalia has, as of July 28 recorded 3,212 COVID19 cases with 93 deaths.

The cabinet approved the lifting of the travel restrictions on Thursday and ordered the immigration department to put in place measures for resumption of international travel.

Despite the lifting of the ban, travelers from Somalia will not access Kenya after Nairobi added Somalia to the list of countries not welcome until further notice owing to COVID19 spread.
